Our services help maintain the right temperature for water and air in hospitals, which is vital for safety

We know all too well that there are currently a lot of stress points in the health sector. Budgetary pressures are severe, but it’s vital that certain things in hospitals keep going to provide a safe service. Temperature regulation (both heating and cooling) and hot water are crucial in maintaining safety for patients, staff, and visitors alike. Heating, cooling, and hot water together account for around two-thirds of a typical UK hospital’s energy consumption. So one key consideration is ensuring that boiler and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) plant is future-fit and energy efficient. In this blog, we’re looking at how our services meet three considerations for our hospital boiler and hospital HVAC.

Maintaining the right temperatures while contributing to climate goals

With the most extensive estate portfolio in Europe, the NHS provides a massive healthcare infrastructure in the UK. And private providers have a network of hospitals too. Ensuring that each facility has an energy efficient boiler and HVAC system is a huge undertaking. But it’s also crucial to consider how keeping temperatures right internally can contribute to broader climate goals. Indeed, there’s an increasing awareness by NHS hospital trusts around this. A major central London NHS Foundation Trust declared a climate emergency in 2021 (>> link to webpage here). Together, we can promote energy efficiency – and keep essential service at hospitals running sustainably for the long term. Here are three ways that Hodgkinson Bennis can help.

1. Fitting energy efficient hospital boiler and hospital HVAC systems

We’re experts at fitting and commissioning new plant in NHS and other hospitals with minimum disruption. We know that hospital boiler and HVAC systems are often site- and sector-specific. For instance, fitting a system which uses heat recovery from clinical waste incineration requires the expertise and initiative of a company like ours. Where budgets don’t stretch to wholly new systems, fitting new equipment also extends to state-of-the-art thermostats and timer switches. For instance, we could fit a compensator, which is a form of control for heating systems that automatically regulates the heating temperature based on the weather, even with the changeable UK climate.

2. Service and maintenance schedules contribute to energy efficiency

Once hospitals have an efficient boiler or HVAC system fitted, it’s essential to keep it regularly serviced and maintained. From burners to air handling units, we’ll keep everything running smoothly by devising a servicing schedule to ensure systems go on operating at peak efficiency. Meanwhile, steam boilers and high-pressure hot water boilers over 110 degrees centigrade must conform to the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR). We can undertake annual PSSR inspections, which allow you to be able to ensure your steam boiler or high-pressure hot water boiler. And we’re also able to perform the more arduous Non-Destructive Test (NDT), which most boiler systems will need on a five-year timetable.

3. Integrating sustainable solutions for healthcare

Many older hospitals were not designed with energy efficiency in mind. And factoring in inefficiencies in water usage, hospitals have a fantastic opportunity to save money on utilities while improving sustainability. There are several options to improve energy efficiency and water usage in hospitals. In older systems we can address the issue of wasting hot water by eliminating redundancies, rationalising pipework, or installing point-of-use heaters. We can advise on the use of self-closing taps in sinks, push-button controls in showers, and in-built flow regulators throughout your bathrooms will reduce the need for hot water. And for more innovative solutions, we’re on hand to discuss fitting solar panels on roofs and switching to sustainable energy providers.
